Foundational movements: Developing the Human Weapon System from the ground up

The following information is part of the presentation delivered by Chris Frankel, PhD at the Inaugural U.S. Army Reserve Holistic Health and Fitness Summit at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, March 8-9, highlighting how the USAR can effectively implement the H2F system within its units while fostering broader knowledge and understanding. In the Holistic Health and Fitness, or H2F, environment, success isn’t just about intensity—it’s about intent. And that intent begins with understanding how Soldiers move. At the core of effective physical readiness is a concept known as foundational movements—a structured, evidence-informed approach to developing human movement capability that scales across training levels, equipment types, and occupational demands. Whether you’re a strength coach, physical therapist, pregnancy and postpartum performance training—P3T— instructor, or squad leader, embracing foundational movements can help you build more robust, adaptable, and mission-ready Soldiers. What are foundational movements? Foundational movements represent the essential building blocks of human physical competence and proficiency. They are not exercises in themselves, but categories of movement strategies that form the basis for everything from basic locomotion to complex occupational tasks. This framework breaks down movement into three key components: 1. Anchor Movements These are the core movement patterns: plank/bracing, push, pull, rotate, hinge, squat, lunge, step, crawl, and climb. Each serves as a foundation for strength, endurance, mobility, power, and coordination. 2. Primary Vectors Variables such as foot and hand placement, range of motion, and plane of motion that influence the physics and biomechanics of each movement. 3. Secondary Vectors Modifiers like equipment type, tempo, and load placement that add specificity or complexity to a movement. By becoming proficient, adaptable, and comfortable through training in different combinations of these elements, Soldiers can master not just exercises, but the movement skills that transfer to occupational readiness and remain reliable under high-stress conditions such as combat or crisis response. Why it matters for H2F The H2F system is about holistic readiness. That includes building bodies that can not only survive but thrive in diverse and demanding environments. Foundational movements provide a shared language and structure for developing programs across multiple domains—physical therapy, P3T, strength and conditioning, and tactical skills training. That shift begins with how we teach and reinforce movement. In the foundational movement model, we don’t just throw reps at dysfunction—we develop competence through repetition with purpose. Movement becomes a skill to be learned, refined, and applied. This means focusing on positions, transitions, and timing—not just load. For H2F, this philosophy provides the connective tissue between training environments, equipment systems, and Soldier tasks. Insights from AUSA Hot Topic: Using data, AI without losing focus

This is third in a series of insights from the AUSA Hot Topic event focused on Holistic Health and the Resilient Soldier in Arlington, Virginia, March 5. Read the rest of the series here. Another big topic at the event was how we can use live data and machine learning to support human performance and improve Soldier readiness. While these tools offer exciting possibilities, there’s an important truth we can’t ignore: Just because we can measure something doesn’t mean it matters. Start with the right questions The real danger isn’t whether machine learning will be helpful—it’s jumping in too quickly without clearly defining the problem we’re trying to solve. If we don’t know what success looks like, we risk wasting time and resources chasing the wrong metrics, focusing on what’s easy to measure rather than what actually drives performance. Avoid the extremes In human performance, there are two common mistakes: 1. Over-measuring things that don’t matter. 2. Ignoring useful data because it seems too complex. Both approaches are flawed. We either end up with data that doesn’t lead to meaningful change—or we fall back on outdated methods and gut instincts. We need a smarter middle ground. Tools are only as good as the questions they serve AI, machine learning, and data dashboards are just tools. They only become valuable when they’re guided by clear goals, thoughtful planning, and smart decision-making. We must focus on the metrics that move the needle, not just ones that look impressive on a chart. The goal should always be to turn data into action—to improve how Soldiers perform, recover, and stay mission-ready. Making the invisible visible Human performance includes physical readiness, cognitive sharpness, and behavioral resilience—all of which change under stress. If we can’t track and adjust these things, we’re guessing instead of optimizing. Good data, applied the right way, helps us make informed choices about training, recovery, and readiness—ensuring our people are truly prepared for the demands of combat. Insights from AUSA Hot Topic: The will to fight

This is second in a series of insights from the AUSA Hot Topic event focused on Holistic Health and the Resilient Soldier in Arlington, Virginia, March 5. Read the rest of the series here. One of the most thought-provoking questions we discussed during the panel came from a 2018 RAND report: What fuels a Soldier’s will to fight? RAND defines the “will to fight” as the inner drive to keep going—to fight, endure, and win—even in the toughest moments. They found it’s not just about having the best gear or tech. It comes down to human motivation, capability, and connection—factors that exist at the national, unit, and individual levels. Why physical readiness supports mental resolve The will to fight isn’t just about mindset. It’s also about how the body holds up under stress. When a Soldier’s heart rate spikes, breathing quickens, and core temperature rises, it can overwhelm the brain, cloud decision-making, and drain focus. That’s why physical training is about more than building muscles—it’s about preparing the body and mind to stay sharp when it matters most. How H2F helps build durable Soldiers The Army’s H2F framework is designed to do just that. It combines smart physical conditioning, stress exposure, cognitive training, nutrition, sleep, and spiritual readiness. These pieces work together to help Soldiers better manage their physiological responses and stay mentally strong in high-pressure situations. Col. Brian Koyn, 82nd Airborne Division chaplain, made a strong point during the panel: structured training environments—when done right—can help Soldiers develop greater awareness and control over their mental and physical states. Where mind and body meet: The readiness connection We call this overlap the psycho-neuro-physiological nexus—a fancy way of saying the mind and body are deeply connected. High stress affects everything from strength to focus. But when Soldiers learn how to recognize and regulate their own stress responses, they gain a sense of control and improve their performance. Fatigue management: A smarter way to train Brig. Gen. Deidre Teyhen, Defense Health Network National Capital Region director, introduced another important idea: fatigue management as a key performance indicator. Just like strength coaches use periodization to plan workouts, H2F teams can use fatigue management to guide training and recovery over time. This approach helps avoid burnout, improves recovery, and keeps Soldiers mission-ready. I shared an example called AMRAP-120, a training model that teaches Soldiers how to pace themselves, recognize fatigue, and adjust effort—all in real time. Knowledge sharing: Getting everyone on the same page Another key takeaway from the panel was the importance of knowledge management—making sure everyone from Soldiers to leadership shares a common understanding of terms, protocols, and training strategies. Clear communication across all levels improves how H2F is taught and applied. In fact, a good knowledge management system can sometimes be more important than an athlete management system, because it helps everyone make smart, aligned decisions that add value and impact. On March 5, I had the opportunity to join the AUSA Hot Topic event focused on Holistic Health and the Resilient Soldier in Arlington, Virginia. Alongside Col. Brian Koyn, 82nd Airborne Division chaplain, and Brig. Gen. Deidre Teyhen, Defense Health Network National Capital Region director, our panel discussed how the Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness program can improve Soldier readiness and resilience. From my civilian background in human performance, education, and data analytics, I shared thoughts on how we can build both resilience and robustness in our Soldiers—and why these qualities matter in combat. In human performance, it means staying calm under pressure, adapting to challenges, and bouncing back quickly. For the Army, resilience is more than just a buzzword—it’s a proven way to keep Soldiers strong in tough situations. Robustness: More than just recovery While resilience is about recovering after stress, robustness is about staying strong during stress. A robust Soldier can maintain focus, decision-making, and performance through difficult conditions. This connects to the idea of being “anti-fragile”—getting stronger, not just surviving, under pressure. The H2F framework supports this by combining physical, mental, nutritional, sleep, and spiritual training. This integrated approach helps Soldiers better manage stress and stay ready, even in high-pressure environments. Turning physical training into mental toughness Physical training isn’t just for fitness—it’s a daily chance to build mental strength, decision-making under fatigue, and team cohesion. As Teyhen said: PT is where the warrior spirit gets built. Well-planned training sessions can help Soldiers learn how to regulate their bodies and minds, improve self-awareness, and perform when it counts. These daily opportunities shape performance far beyond the gym. Solving a need for space, CIMT invests in BeaverFit solutions for Army units

As the Holistic Health and Fitness initiative, or H2F, rolls out across the Army, units must overcome the hurdle of finding dedicated space to carry out their programs. BeaverFit and the U.S. Army’s Center for Initial Military Training have begun to solve that challenge together with a solution delivered to more than a dozen units this year. https://youtu.be/QyuCx7__w5Y?si=wbcl5ulv5zjSYC1K Nicknamed the CIMT SunPro, the solution consists of three components: BeaverFit Performance Locker A shipping container with anchored training rigs and secure storage BeaverFit Cardio Locker A container including off-grid cardio equipment and roll-up doors BeaverFit SunPro A tension fabric structure that creates a training space protected from the elements, with the option to add rubberized flooring and lifting platforms While the Army plans to resource more than 100 brigades with Soldier Performance Readiness Centers by 2030, in the meantime, the readiness of Soldiers and the success of unit-level H2F programs depend on quick solutions. Select units at Forts Bliss, Huachuca, Liberty, Jackson, Johnson, Drum, Campbell and Joint Base Lewis-McChord are the first to receive the new BeaverFit SunPros designed to create space for H2F activities. “It’s great to see that as units are being resourced for H2F, CIMT is ensuring this includes proper equipment and the space to utilize it,” said Jason Clark, training and education lead, BeaverFit. “Our goal is to develop environments alongside them in which those resources can be used effectively.” The desired environment called for an all-weather strength and conditioning asset that could accommodate personnel up to the company level. Most of the resourced units had used standalone BeaverFit Lockers to train, which offer suitable platoon-level strength training capabilities but lack weather protection and integrated conditioning assets. The specific SunPro and Locker configuration designed for CIMT provides all-weather coverage, strength and conditioning components, and – the biggest win, according to Clark – can be placed anywhere because it’s not Real Property. Instead of Soldiers needing to trek across the installation to a separate facility for a training session, the SunPro can be placed at the unit level, removing logistical barriers to training. “The SunPro creates an environment in the outdoor space that limits as many factors that could negatively influence a training session as possible,” he stated. And as the SunPros are delivered, CIMT is also funding training and education courses for select locations to empower small unit leaders to be force multipliers within the environment. “Space does not automatically equal an environment,” Clark explained. “The environment is human driven. Training and education sets an environment of organizational success versus chaos. Kudos to CIMT for leaning forward into providing space and training resources instead of waiting for it to be figured out at the unit level, and also, good on the coaches for continuing to do the most with what they have and scaling their mindset as the program grows.” As the Army’s mindset around physical training evolves, BeaverFit’s support evolves in step. “We don’t do this from a standpoint of ‘we know best;’ it’s a collaborative effort to receive feedback from the higher-level command, the experts on site, and the Soldiers on the ground,” Clark said. “It’s our goal to be the Army’s trusted partner. BeaverFit ignites a ‘SPRC’ with first Soldier Performance Readiness Center

A brand new Soldier Performance Readiness Center built by BeaverFit opened March 24 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. The SPRC is the first of its kind for the U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training. Around the same time, a shipment of more than 100 BeaverFit container gyms made their way across the country to various training schools and units, purchased by the U.S. Army CIMT. “One of the Army’s main focus areas is H2F – or Holistic Health and Fitness,” said Bryan Studebaker, senior vice president of government programs at BeaverFit. “To that end, they are heavily investing in equipment and infrastructure that support this objective.” The cultural shift to H2F aims to improve Soldier and unit readiness by addressing five domains of readiness: physical, mental, spiritual, nutrition and sleep. To operationalize these domains, BeaverFit was recently awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research contract to supply a variety of equipment and infrastructure in direct support of H2F. To date, BeaverFit has provided the Army solutions ranging from manufacturing more than 23,000 lanes of Army Combat Fitness Test equipment; supplying 2,000 expeditionary container gyms; converting indoor and outdoor spaces to provide designated areas for physical training, classroom education, rehabilitation and cognitive performance; and now – the CIMT’s first Soldier Performance Readiness Center. A cultural shift The SPRC “represents a seismic shift” towards how the Army approaches how troops are trained, evaluated and sustained, said Brig. Gen. Jason E. Kelly, Fort Jackson’s commander. “It is an investment in individual Soldier preparedness.” The SPRC also helps overcome resource challenges Army units might face when developing an effective program to support the individual Soldier, because it acts as the centerpoint in which all activities are enabled. In simpler words, the SPRC provides the environment for the H2F ecosystem to thrive. Designing the Soldier Performance Readiness Center The SPRC project at Fort Jackson converted an unused facility into training space with two 50-foot dual-sided modular rigs with integrated storage, a robust equipment package with an emphasis on team-based conditioning, rubber flooring for strength and conditioning, performance turf, a rope climb tower, sleds, yokes, weighted stretchers, BeaverFit squad logs and full complement of various low-impact cardio machines. Sam Hovig, BeaverFit government territory sales manager and United States Marine Corps veteran, said the SPRC introduces new recruits to H2F early in their careers and enables critical skill development they will carry throughout their time in the Army. “The Army has implemented H2F within FORSCOM at the operational units, and with this new training capability, recruits will have the positive impact of H2F early on and will build upon that as they get to their permanent duty stations,” he said. “What made this project unique was being very cognizant of the population that will be using it,” he explained. “The typical recruit likely does not have significant time under a barbell or proper coaching on foundational movement mechanics. This heavily influenced each portion of the facility design – from the modular rig to where recruits would be entering and exiting the facility – to ensure this space met the stated throughput needs, allowed for visibility from coaches at all times, and did not sacrifice any required training capabilities.” Expanded options for H2F The container gyms for CIMT were purchased to outfit units with an expanded outdoor training solution beyond the available indoor space at their installation. The gym-in-a-boxes, as the Army knows them, may be placed directly beside unit headquarters or barracks, enabling easier access to training, camaraderie and esprit de corps. Army senior leaders have said the cost that goes along with H2F is “well worth the investment,” said Maj. Gen. John D.
