Robustness as a first line of defense: Refining human performance for the long game

We talk about resilience in human performance — but what about robustness? Not as a buzzword. Not as just “more grit.” But as a practical concept that influences how we plan, train, recover and adapt. To me, robustness cuts across domains. It lives in our bioenergetics (what some call “energy systems”), our tissue tolerance, our brain’s ability to regulate under fatigue, and our daily rhythms of training and recovery. What follows isn’t about what people are doing wrong. It’s about surfacing a conversation I feel has been missing, and exploring how framing human performance through the lens of robustness has helped me coach, design and decide more effectively. The Durable Performer Who’s that person in your experience — not necessarily the fastest, strongest, or loudest, but the one who always shows up? The one whose name rarely pops up in overtraining or injury reports, but who always seems ready to train, deploy, or compete again tomorrow? Most of us have seen and/or worked with them. They’re not usually the testing-room highlight reel. But they’re the ones still performing when it counts. A demonstration of the saying: “The best ability is availability.” For me, it was a high school teammate of mine — we’ll call him TK — who never seemed to be the centerpiece of any group, but he was always there. Always hit his marks, didn’t grind himself into the ground, didn’t get caught up in training extremes. He wasn’t outstanding in the weight room, but he hit harder than most on the field. He trained and practiced consistently, recovered routinely, and adapted quietly. When others were sidelined mid- or late-season, he was still progressing. Not only because of talent, but because he was built for repeatability. He wasn’t resilient because he bounced back. He was robust because he didn’t break down in the first place. The Fragile System Now, flip the script. Think of a time when a program, phase, or team of yours looked good on paper — testing numbers were up, morale seemed high, training blocks were firing on all cylinders. Then something shifted. Maybe it was an unexpected travel cycle, an illness that hit the team, a change in leadership, or just the accumulated fatigue of a high-tempo stretch. Suddenly, performance dipped. Recovery lagged. Injuries popped. And all the signs of progress faded fast. Sound familiar? We’ve seen this more than once. Sometimes it’s not about any single decision, it’s about systems being built with too little slack, too much rigidity, or no margin for error. Everything works until it doesn’t. That’s not robustness. That’s a fragile system, one that performs well in ideal conditions but collapses under constraints of real life. Robust programming isn’t just about building strength and capacity. It’s about building tolerance, redundancy and adaptability into the system so it can bend without breaking, or even become antifragile, strengthening with repeated exposure to stressors. Robustness builds antifragility. The Unexpected Variable And then there’s the wild card. Think about someone you’ve worked with who didn’t check all the usual boxes. Maybe they didn’t test well in the lab. Maybe they struggled with traditional programming. Maybe they didn’t “win” the weight room, the force plate, or the VO₂max test. But when things got chaotic, late season playoffs, deployment, high-tempo ops, or just a stretch of real-world friction, they performed. Not just adequately, but impressively. For me, there’s been more than one. I’ve seen athletes, and my colleagues have described tactical professionals, who don’t dominate in the metrics we tend to chase, but they show a kind of deep adaptability you can’t fake. They read the room, regulate their internal state, and apply effort where it counts, not everywhere, all the time. This kind of robustness doesn’t always show up in performance testing. It shows up in the space between variables, the glue that holds decision-making, movement and recovery together when the plan falls apart. We can’t always predict who these people will be. But we can train systems that leave space for them to emerge. Cognitive strength and conditioning: Professional robustness I’ve been talking about robustness in terms of physiology, structure, and adaptability, but the same principles apply upstream, to how we reason, interpret and apply information. Especially research. Let’s call this professional robustness — the ability to navigate uncertainty, absorb complexity, and still make good decisions. It’s a form of cognitive strength and conditioning. Not just memorizing facts or chasing the latest study, but training your judgment system the way we train tissue tolerance and motor control. If we revisit the three profiles above — The Durable Performer, The Fragile System, and The Unexpected Variable — we may start to see how these same themes play out in how professionals consume, interpret and apply human performance research. The Durable Performer → The Durable Thinker Not flashy. Not quoting the latest study every week. But their coaching decisions hold up over time, across individuals, cycles and chaos. They understand and use research, but they don’t need a new paper to adjust a warm-up or progress a hinge pattern. These are the pros who’ve built mental models through repetition and reflection. They’ve trained their internal systems to spot patterns, manage exceptions, and deliver outcomes without being overdependent on trends. Some of us are the older coaches, those who built their instincts in the field but still keep learning. Others are newer coaches showing up with sports science credentials, but who know they’re standing on the shoulders of professionals who’ve coached real humans under real conditions and constraints. And here’s what they really understand: Just because something is measured doesn’t mean it’s meaningful. And just because something happens doesn’t mean it should be trained. They understand the difference between descriptive information (what happened) and prescriptive insight (what should be done).  That’s why we have different statistical tools, testing protocols and decision frameworks. Descriptive tools summarize behavior. Prescriptive tools predict and guide decisions. Durable thinkers know which is which — and don’t cross that line without proof. Cognitive
